MINERAL SPECIES AND CRYSTAL TYPE

Ametrine is a naturally colour-zoned variety of quartz that combines the purple tones of amethyst with the golden yellow to orange tones of citrine within the same crystal. Quartz is silicon dioxide, with the chemical formula SiO₂, and belongs to the trigonal crystal system. Ametrine is especially valued because it displays two of the best-known quartz colour varieties in one specimen, creating a striking contrast between violet, lavender, honey yellow, golden, and sometimes pale smoky or clear areas.

This specimen has been shaped and polished into a sphere, a form that allows the natural colour transitions and internal features of the quartz to be viewed from many angles. A crystal sphere is polished into a rounded display shape rather than retaining its original crystal faces, making it ideal for decorative presentation while still preserving the natural mineralogical character of the stone.

COLOUR, PATTERN AND APPEARANCE

Bolivian Ametrine is known for its distinctive colour zoning. The purple areas are associated with amethyst, while the yellow to golden areas are associated with citrine. The contrast may appear as soft blending, angular zones, patches, bands, or more subtle internal transitions depending on how the original quartz crystal formed and how the sphere was cut and polished.

The polished surface gives the stone a bright vitreous lustre typical of quartz. Natural internal features may include veils, wispy inclusions, colour zoning, small internal fractures, cloudy areas, or clear sections. These features are part of the stone’s natural geological formation and help make each Ametrine sphere individual. When displayed under good lighting, the mix of purple and yellow tones can give the piece excellent visual depth and decorative appeal.

GEOLOGICAL FORMATION AND BOLIVIAN ORIGIN

Ametrine forms when different colour-producing conditions occur within a single quartz crystal during its geological growth. The amethyst colour is linked to trace iron and natural irradiation processes, while the citrine colour is associated with iron in a different state or thermal conditions affecting the crystal. The result is a natural two-colour quartz that is far less common than single-colour amethyst or citrine.

Bolivia is the most famous and commercially important source of natural Ametrine, particularly from deposits associated with the Anahí mining region. These quartz crystals form in mineral-rich environments where silica-bearing fluids deposit quartz into cavities, veins, and fracture systems over long periods of time. The unusual combination of temperature, chemistry, and geological conditions allows the purple and yellow colour zones to develop together in the same crystal structure.

COLLECTING, DISPLAY AND CARE

This Ametrine sphere is ideal for display on a stand, shelf, desk, windowsill, mineral cabinet, or as part of a larger quartz and crystal collection. Its rounded polished form makes it a visually appealing decorative piece, while its natural combination of amethyst and citrine colouring gives it strong collector interest.

Quartz has a Mohs hardness of approximately 7, making Ametrine more durable than many softer display minerals. However, it should still be handled with care to protect the polished surface. Avoid dropping the sphere, knocking it against harder materials, or cleaning it with harsh chemicals or abrasive cloths. To preserve its finish, gently wipe with a soft dry cloth and store or display securely on a suitable stand or stable surface.
