ABOUT SONNINIA AMMONITES

Sonninia is an extinct genus of ammonite from the Jurassic Period. Ammonites were marine cephalopods, related to modern squid, octopus and nautilus, but unlike squid and octopus, they lived inside a coiled, chambered shell. These shells were divided into internal chambers, with the animal occupying the final outer chamber while using the earlier chambers to help control buoyancy in the ancient sea.

Sonninia ammonites are especially associated with the Middle Jurassic, particularly the Bajocian Stage, and are well known from classic British Jurassic localities. The genus was formally named by Bayle in 1879 and belongs to the family Sonniniidae, within the ammonite order Ammonitida. Sonninia specimens are recognised for their attractive coiled form, ribbed shell ornament and often compressed whorl shape. Many examples show strong, sweeping ribs and a distinct outer rim, features that make them highly collectable among Jurassic ammonite fossils.

INFERIOR OOLITE GEOLOGICAL SETTING

This specimen comes from the Inferior Oolite, an important Middle Jurassic rock unit exposed along parts of the Dorset coast. The Inferior Oolite is famous for preserving a wide range of marine fossils, including ammonites, belemnites, bivalves, brachiopods, gastropods and other remains from an ancient shallow sea.

During the time this ammonite lived, the area that is now Dorset was covered by warm, shallow marine waters. These seas supported a diverse ecosystem of swimming cephalopods, fish, marine reptiles and seabed-dwelling invertebrates. Ammonites such as Sonninia would have been active marine animals, moving through the water column while feeding on small prey and avoiding larger predators.

The Inferior Oolite represents a carbonate-rich marine depositional environment, with limestones and associated sediments forming on ancient seabeds. The fossils preserved within these deposits provide an important record of life during the Middle Jurassic and are widely studied by collectors, geologists and palaeontologists.

BURTON BRADSTOCK AND THE JURASSIC COAST

Burton Bradstock, Dorset is part of the world-famous Jurassic Coast, a UNESCO World Heritage Site recognised for its outstanding sequence of Triassic, Jurassic and Cretaceous rocks. This coastline is one of the most important fossil-bearing regions in the United Kingdom and has been studied for generations by fossil collectors and scientists.

Fossils from Burton Bradstock are prized for their classic Dorset provenance and their connection to the broader Jurassic Coast fossil record. Ammonites from this area are particularly appealing because they combine scientific interest with natural decorative beauty, making them excellent display fossils.

COLLECTABLE BRITISH JURASSIC FOSSIL

This Sonninia ammonite fossil is a fine choice for collectors of British fossils, Jurassic Coast specimens, ammonites, natural history items and educational geological material. Its origin from Burton Bradstock, Dorset, combined with its Inferior Oolite age and attractive ammonite form, makes it a desirable addition to any fossil collection.

The specimen has been carefully chosen for its natural character and display appeal.
