ABOUT HARPOCERAS AMMONITES

Harpoceras is a well-known extinct genus of ammonite from the Early Jurassic seas. Ammonites were marine cephalopods, related to modern squid, octopus and nautilus, but unlike squid and octopus, they lived inside a coiled, chambered shell. The animal occupied the final outer body chamber, while the earlier chambers helped control buoyancy as it moved through the water.

Harpoceras ammonites are especially admired for their elegant, compressed shell form and flowing rib pattern. Many examples show a flattened, involute coil, a sharp outer keel and distinctive curved ribs that sweep gracefully across the shell. This ribbing is often described as falcate, meaning sickle-shaped, and gives Harpoceras specimens a highly attractive, classic ammonite appearance. The genus is associated with the family Hildoceratidae, within the superfamily Hildoceratoidea and the order Ammonitida.

GEOLOGICAL AGE AND BEACON LIMESTONE FORMATION

This specimen comes from the Beacon Limestone, a fossiliferous Jurassic limestone unit known from the Ilminster area of Somerset. The Beacon Limestone is particularly valued by collectors for producing attractive British ammonites and other marine fossils from the Jurassic Period.

Harpoceras is strongly associated with the Lower Jurassic, especially the Toarcian Stage, a time when much of what is now southern Britain was covered by warm shallow seas. Ammonites such as Harpoceras are important in geology because they evolved rapidly and were widely distributed, making them useful index fossils for dating and correlating Jurassic rock layers.

The presence of Harpoceras in Jurassic deposits connects this fossil to an ancient marine ecosystem that existed around 180 million years ago. At that time, the area around present-day Somerset was part of a broad sea inhabited by ammonites, belemnites, bivalves, brachiopods, fish and marine reptiles.

ILMINSTER, SOMERSET FOSSIL LOCALITY

Ilminster, Somerset is a classic British fossil locality with strong links to the Jurassic geology of southwest England. Fossils from this area are sought after for their historic British provenance and their connection to the fossil-rich limestone beds of the region.

The Beacon Limestone represents a marine depositional environment where carbonate-rich sediments accumulated on the seabed. Over time, the remains of marine animals were buried, mineralised and preserved as fossils within the limestone. Ammonites from this formation are particularly appealing because they combine scientific interest, natural beauty and a desirable UK locality.

COLLECTABLE BRITISH JURASSIC DISPLAY SPECIMEN

This Harpoceras ammonite fossil is a highly collectable piece for anyone interested in British fossils, Jurassic ammonites, Somerset geology, palaeontology or natural history. Its classic coiled form and genuine Beacon Limestone origin make it suitable for display in a fossil cabinet, study collection, educational setting or geology-themed gift.

The specimen has been carefully selected for its character and display appeal. As the photograph shows the exact fossil supplied, you can buy with confidence knowing precisely which piece will be received. With its authentic Ilminster provenance, Jurassic age and included Certificate of Authenticity lifetime guarantee generic card, this Harpoceras ammonite offers a direct connection to the ancient seas of Jurassic Britain.
