ABOUT LYTOCERAS AMMONITES

Lytoceras is an extinct genus of ammonite from the Jurassic seas. Ammonites were marine cephalopods, related to modern squid, octopus and nautilus, but they lived inside a coiled, chambered shell. The living animal occupied the final outer body chamber, while the earlier chambers helped control buoyancy as it moved through the ancient marine environment.

The genus Lytoceras was formally named by Eduard Suess in 1865. It belongs to the family Lytoceratidae, within the superfamily Lytoceratoidea and the order Lytoceratida. Lytoceratid ammonites are well known for their elegant, often widely coiled shell form and their distinctive ribbing or growth-line ornament. Their attractive shape and important geological range make them popular with collectors and useful to palaeontologists studying Jurassic marine faunas.

SHELL FORM AND FOSSIL FEATURES

Lytoceras ammonites typically show a planispiral coiled shell with rounded whorls and a relatively open, balanced appearance. Many examples have fine ribbing or delicate shell ornament that follows the curve of the whorl, giving the fossil a graceful and natural look. Compared with some more strongly ribbed ammonites, Lytoceras often has a more refined, flowing shell style, making it appealing as both a scientific specimen and a display fossil.

The shell of an ammonite was divided internally into chambers, separated by walls called septa. These chambers were connected by a tube called the siphuncle, allowing the animal to regulate gas and fluid within the shell for buoyancy. This sophisticated shell structure helped ammonites thrive in Mesozoic seas for millions of years.

BEACON LIMESTONE AND JURASSIC AGE

This specimen comes from the Beacon Limestone, a fossiliferous Jurassic limestone unit known from the Ilminster area of Somerset. The Beacon Limestone is valued for producing attractive British ammonites and other marine fossils preserved within hard limestone beds.

Lytoceras is strongly associated with Jurassic marine deposits, including the Lower Jurassic Toarcian Stage. During this time, much of what is now southern Britain was covered by warm shallow seas. These seas supported a rich ecosystem of ammonites, belemnites, bivalves, brachiopods, fish and marine reptiles. Ammonites from these deposits are important because they help geologists understand the age, environment and correlation of Jurassic rock layers.

ILMINSTER, SOMERSET FOSSIL LOCALITY

Ilminster, Somerset is a classic British fossil locality with a long association with Jurassic ammonites and marine fossils. The area’s limestone deposits preserve evidence of an ancient seabed where marine animals lived, died and were gradually buried by sediment. Over millions of years, these remains became fossilised within the rock.

Fossils from Ilminster are sought after for their British provenance, historic geological interest and connection to the fossil-rich Jurassic strata of southwest England. A Lytoceras ammonite from this locality offers collectors a tangible link to the ancient seas that once covered Somerset.

COLLECTABLE BRITISH JURASSIC DISPLAY FOSSIL

This Lytoceras ammonite fossil is a desirable specimen for collectors of British fossils, Jurassic ammonites, Somerset fossils, palaeontology specimens and natural history display pieces. Its recognised genus, Beacon Limestone origin and classic Ilminster locality make it an excellent addition to a fossil cabinet, teaching collection, display shelf or geology-themed gift.

The specimen has been carefully selected for authenticity, natural appearance and display value. With its genuine Jurassic age, classic UK locality and included Certificate of Authenticity lifetime guarantee generic card, this Lytoceras fossil offers a direct connection to the ancient marine world of Jurassic Britain.
