HOLCOPHYLLOCERAS (HOLCOPHYLLOCERAS) MEDITERRANEUM FOSSIL AMMONITE – CALLOVIAN,
JURASSIC – SAKATARA, MADAGASCAR

ABOUT THE FOSSIL:

This stunningly preserved Holcophylloceras (Holcophylloceras) mediterraneum ammonite fossil originates from the Callovian stage of the Middle Jurassic (~166-163 million years ago) and was discovered in Sakatara, Madagascar. Holcophylloceras is a genus of phylloceratid ammonites, known for their smooth, involute shells with prominent, complex suture patterns, making them a fascinating species within the ammonite lineage.

During the Middle Jurassic, ammonites like Holcophylloceras mediterraneum thrived in warm, shallow marine environments, where they played a crucial role in prehistoric marine food chains. Unlike many other ammonites, phylloceratids are believed to be deep-water cephalopods, exhibiting more hydrodynamic shell structures that enabled more efficient movement through the water. The Callovian-aged deposits of Madagascar are famous for yielding exquisitely preserved ammonites, offering valuable insight into the paleobiology of Jurassic seas.
