PTYCHOPHYLLOCERAS (PTYCHOPHYLLOCERAS) SUBPTYCHOICUM FOSSIL AMMONITE – OXFORDIAN,
JURASSIC – TULEAR, MADAGASCAR

ABOUT THE FOSSIL:

This well-preserved Ptychophylloceras (Ptychophylloceras) subptychoicum ammonite fossil originates from the Oxfordian stage of the Late Jurassic (~163-157 million years ago) and was discovered in Tulear, Madagascar. Ptychophylloceras is a genus of phylloceratid ammonites, characterized by their smooth, involute shells with intricate suture patterns, making them a distinct and scientifically significant ammonite group.

Unlike many other ammonites, phylloceratids like Ptychophylloceras subptychoicum are believed to have been deep-water species, with their streamlined shells suggesting advanced swimming capabilities. Their highly lobed and complex suture lines make them a valuable specimen for researchers and collectors alike. The Oxfordian-aged deposits of Tulear, Madagascar, are recognized for their rich ammonite formations, providing crucial insights into Jurassic marine life.
