MINERAL COMPOSITION & SCIENTIFIC CLASSIFICATIONLapis Lazuli is a metamorphic rock primarily composed of the mineral lazurite, a complex sodium calcium aluminosilicate sulphide with the general formula (Na,Ca)₈(AlSiO₄)₆(S,SO₄,Cl)₁–₂. It belongs to the feldspathoid mineral group. Lazurite crystallises in the isometric (cubic) crystal system, though Lapis Lazuli itself occurs as a massive aggregate rather than visible crystal forms.In addition to lazurite, Lapis Lazuli commonly contains:• Calcite (white veining or patches)• Pyrite (metallic gold flecks)• Minor sodalite or other feldspathoidsThe rich blue colour is caused by sulphur within the lazurite structure.
