ARNIOCERAS AMMONITE FOSSIL INFORMATION

Arnioceras is a classic Early Jurassic ammonite genus known from Lower Lias deposits. Ammonites were extinct marine cephalopods related to modern squid, cuttlefish and nautilus, living inside chambered, coiled shells. Their shells are among the most recognisable fossils of the Jurassic Period and are highly valued by collectors for their natural spiral form, scientific importance and strong display appeal.

Arnioceras is typically recognised for its evolute coiling, where the inner whorls remain visible, and for its strong, regular ribbing across the shell. These ribs give the ammonite a bold, textured appearance and help create the distinctive Lower Jurassic look that makes the genus popular with fossil collectors. Depending on preservation, specimens may show visible whorl structure, rib detail, matrix association, natural shell impression and mineralised surface features.

The presence of Cymbites adds extra interest to this fossil multi block. Cymbites is another Lower Jurassic ammonite form, generally smaller and more compact in appearance. Having Arnioceras together with Cymbites in the same block gives the specimen added visual variety and a stronger sense of the fossil-bearing marine environment in which these ammonites were preserved.

BLACK VEN MARLS AND LOWER LIAS GEOLOGY

This fossil comes from the Black Ven Marls, part of the Lower Lias sequence exposed around Charmouth and Lyme Regis. These Early Jurassic marine sediments were laid down when the area was covered by ancient seas. Fine muds and silts accumulated on the seabed, preserving the remains of ammonites, belemnites, bivalves, gastropods, fish and marine reptiles over millions of years.

Arnioceras is especially associated with the Sinemurian stage of the Early Jurassic, an interval in which ammonites were rapidly evolving and diversifying. Ammonites from this period are important in palaeontology because they are widely used for biostratigraphy, helping geologists correlate and date rock layers. This gives the specimen genuine scientific interest as well as attractive display value.

BLACK VEN, CHARMOUTH AND THE JURASSIC COAST

Black Ven, near Charmouth and Lyme Regis, is one of the most famous fossil-bearing areas on the Dorset Jurassic Coast. The cliffs and foreshore are internationally known for Lower Jurassic fossils, particularly ammonites and marine reptile remains. Fossils from this locality are highly collectable because they come from one of Britain’s most iconic and historically important fossil regions.

The Jurassic Coast is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, recognised for its outstanding geological record. A fossil from Black Ven carries excellent locality appeal for collectors of British fossils, Dorset ammonites, Lower Lias specimens and classic Jurassic Coast material.

NATURAL MULTI BLOCK DISPLAY SPECIMEN

This Arnioceras ammonite multi block with Cymbites has been cleaned, prepped and treated by Alison to help present the fossil clearly while retaining its natural geological character. Multi block specimens are especially appealing because they preserve more than one fossil element in the original matrix, giving a more natural impression of the ancient seabed where the ammonites were buried.

This specimen is suitable for ammonite collectors, fossil enthusiasts, geology students, natural history displays, educational collections, cabinet displays or as a distinctive gift for someone interested in British palaeontology. Its named ammonite content, Black Ven Marls origin, Lower Lias age, Jurassic Coast locality and team-discovered provenance make it a desirable addition to a carefully documented fossil collection.
