MINERAL TYPE & SCIENTIFIC CLASSIFICATION

Rainbow Moonstone is a variety of Labradorite, belonging to the Feldspar group. Its chemical composition is typically a sodium-calcium aluminium silicate, commonly represented as (Na,Ca)(Al,Si)₄O₈. It forms within the triclinic crystal system, characteristic of plagioclase feldspars.

Although commonly marketed as “moonstone,” Rainbow Moonstone is mineralogically classified as a transparent to translucent variety of labradorite. Its visual appeal comes from internal structural layering that produces light interference effects.

With a Mohs hardness of approximately 6–6.5, Rainbow Moonstone is suitable for carving and polishing into decorative forms such as obelisks and towers.

OPTICAL EFFECT & VISUAL CHARACTERISTICS

The defining feature of Rainbow Moonstone is its adularescence and labradorescence, optical phenomena caused by light scattering within microscopic lamellar structures inside the feldspar.

This obelisk may display:

• Milky white to translucent body colour

• Blue, rainbow, or multicolour flashes

• Sheen that shifts when viewed from different angles

• Smooth, polished surfaces enhancing light reflection

The flat faces of the obelisk are carefully polished to maximise the visible flashes under natural or artificial light. Each specimen is unique, with variations in clarity, flash intensity, and colour distribution.

GEOLOGICAL FORMATION

Rainbow Moonstone forms in igneous environments, typically within intrusive rocks such as pegmatites and basaltic formations. Slow cooling of molten material allows feldspar crystals to develop internal lamellar structures. These microscopic intergrowths are responsible for the stone’s characteristic optical display.

Deposits of labradorite and related feldspars are found in regions including India, Madagascar, Sri Lanka, and parts of North America. The material used for this obelisk has been cut and polished from naturally formed feldspar rough.

OBELISK FORM & TRADITIONAL ASSOCIATIONS

The obelisk shape features a flat base with four polished sides that taper to a defined apex. This geometric design allows upright display while providing multiple surfaces to showcase internal flashes of colour.

Rainbow Moonstone has been traditionally associated in spiritual symbolism with intuition and new beginnings. These interpretations are cultural and symbolic rather than scientific.

This Rainbow Moonstone Obelisk Point is suitable for:

• Mineral and feldspar collections

• Crystal display pieces

• Decorative home or office décor

• Meditation or symbolic spaces

• Unique gemstone gifts
