SPECIES AND AMMONITE IDENTIFICATION

Pararnioceras alcinoeforme is a Jurassic ammonite, part of the wider group of extinct marine cephalopods that lived in ancient seas during the Mesozoic Era. Ammonites are well known for their coiled shells, chambered internal structure and strong value as index fossils, helping geologists interpret the relative age of rock layers across different locations.

Pararnioceras is typically associated with slender, planispirally coiled ammonites from the Lower Jurassic. Specimens can show a neat, compressed shell form with visible whorls and ribbing depending on preservation. The natural spiral shape is one of the most desirable features for fossil collectors, combining scientific interest with strong visual appeal. As with many Lower Lias ammonites, the fossil records a marine animal that once lived in the warm Jurassic seas that covered parts of what is now southern England.

BLACK VEN MARLS, LOWER LIAS GEOLOGICAL SETTING

This ammonite comes from the famous Black Ven area near Lyme Regis, Dorset, one of the most important fossil localities on the Jurassic Coast. The Black Ven Marls form part of the Lower Lias sequence and are renowned for yielding ammonites and other marine fossils from the Early Jurassic. These sediments were laid down in an ancient sea, where fine muds accumulated on the seabed and preserved the remains of marine life over millions of years.

The Jurassic Coast is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is internationally recognised for its exceptional geological record. The cliffs around Lyme Regis are especially famous for ammonites, marine reptiles, belemnites and other fossils from the Lower Jurassic. A specimen from Black Ven therefore carries strong locality appeal, making it suitable for collectors interested in classic British fossils, historic fossil locations and scientifically important Jurassic strata.

NATURAL FOSSIL DETAIL AND COLLECTABLE APPEAL

This Pararnioceras alcinoeforme ammonite fossil is a genuine natural specimen, selected for its geological interest, locality and display quality. Ammonites from the Lower Lias are valued for their connection to Jurassic marine environments and for their distinctive coiled shell morphology. Depending on the individual specimen, features may include visible whorl structure, natural ribbing, matrix association, shell impression, mineral replacement or surface texture created during fossilisation.

The fossil has been cleaned, prepped and treated by Alison to help present the specimen clearly while retaining its natural character. Preparation is an important part of fossil collecting, particularly for specimens from clay and marl deposits where careful handling is needed to reveal detail and preserve stability.
