BLACK OBSIDIAN FACETED PENDULUM – NATURAL VOLCANIC GLASS

This Black Obsidian Faceted Pendulum is a genuine natural volcanic glass
specimen shaped and polished into a faceted pendulum form. Carefully selected for its deep black colour and smooth reflective finish, this piece highlights the natural character of obsidian in a balanced, symmetrical design. The photograph shows the exact specimen you will receive. Please refer to the listing images for full sizing and proportions.

This crystal is a genuine specimen and includes a Certificate of Authenticity lifetime guarantee generic card.

MATERIAL TYPE & GEOLOGICAL CLASSIFICATION

Black Obsidian is not a crystalline mineral but a naturally occurring volcanic glass formed from rapidly cooled felsic lava. Its primary composition is high-silica material, typically over 70% silicon dioxide (SiO₂), similar in chemistry to rhyolite.

Because obsidian cools so quickly, atoms do not have time to arrange into a crystalline structure. As a result, it is classified as amorphous volcanic glass rather than a true mineral with a defined crystal system.

Obsidian typically has a Mohs hardness of approximately 5–5.5, making it softer than quartz but suitable for carving and polishing into decorative shapes.

COLOUR, TEXTURE & SURFACE FEATURES

This Black Obsidian pendulum displays:

• Uniform deep black colour

• Vitreous, glass-like lustre

• Smooth, polished faceted surfaces

• Opaque structure

The glossy surface is a natural result of its glassy composition. When polished, obsidian develops a highly reflective finish. Some specimens may show subtle internal flow lines or tiny inclusions formed during lava movement and cooling.

Unlike crystalline stones, obsidian fractures with a conchoidal (shell-like) fracture, which historically made it valuable for tool and blade production in ancient cultures.

GEOLOGICAL FORMATION

Black Obsidian forms during volcanic eruptions, when silica-rich lava cools extremely rapidly upon exposure to air or water. This rapid cooling prevents crystal growth, producing natural volcanic glass.

Obsidian is most commonly associated with rhyolitic lava flows and volcanic domes. It can be found in tectonically active regions where volcanic activity has occurred.

Its formation is directly linked to dynamic geological processes, making it a fascinating material for collectors interested in volcanology and igneous rock formation.

FACETED PENDULUM FORM & TRADITIONAL ASSOCIATIONS

This piece has been shaped into a faceted pendulum with a pointed end and suspended chain attachment. The symmetrical design allows for balanced movement, while the polished facets enhance its reflective surface.

Black Obsidian pendulums are traditionally associated in spiritual symbolism with grounding and protection. These interpretations are cultural and symbolic rather than scientific.

This Black Obsidian Faceted Pendulum is suitable for:

• Mineral and volcanic glass collections

• Decorative spiritual tools

• Meditation or symbolic practices

• Unique gemstone gifts

• Igneous rock enthusiasts
